Workers in Canada may soon receive a major financial boost for completing training in some of the country’s most in-demand trades.

During the 2026 Spring Economic Update in Ottawa, François-Philippe Champagne announced new government plans aimed at tackling Canada’s growing skilled labour shortage.

As part of the initiative, the federal government says eligible apprentices who complete their Red Seal certification could receive a one-time $5,000 bonus.

The announcement is part of a larger plan to invest up to $6 billion over five years into hiring, training, and supporting skilled trades workers across Canada.

Canada Facing Major Skilled Trades Shortages

Canada has been dealing with ongoing labour shortages in several key industries, especially in:

  • construction
  • housing development
  • manufacturing
  • infrastructure
  • transportation
  • defence projects

According to the government, the country needs more skilled workers to support major national projects and economic growth.

During his speech, François-Philippe Champagne said:

“Investing in our future also means investing in the people who are building it.”

The government hopes the new incentives will encourage more Canadians, especially young people, to enter skilled trades careers.

What Is the $5,000 Red Seal Bonus?

Under the proposal, apprentices who successfully complete their Red Seal certification would qualify for:

  • a one-time $5,000 payment

The goal is to:

  • speed up certification completion
  • reward workers for finishing training
  • encourage more people to pursue skilled trades careers

The bonus would apply to apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades across Canada.

What Is the Red Seal Program?

The Red Seal Program is Canada’s national standard for skilled trades certification.

It helps ensure that tradespeople meet consistent standards across provinces and territories.

One major advantage of Red Seal certification is mobility:

  • workers can practice their trade across Canada without needing additional certification in another province

The program is jointly managed by:

  • the federal government
  • provincial governments
  • territorial governments

To earn certification, workers typically must:

  • complete apprenticeship training
  • gain required work experience
  • pass the Red Seal examination

Apprentices Could Also Receive Weekly Training Support

In addition to the $5,000 certification bonus, the government plans to provide financial support while apprentices complete mandatory technical training.

Eligible apprentices could receive:

  • up to $400 per week
  • up to $16,000 total per apprentice

This funding is intended to help workers cover:

  • living expenses
  • transportation
  • accommodation
  • training-related costs

during periods of classroom instruction.

Government Wants to Train 100,000 Skilled Workers

The broader investment plan aims to:

  • train and hire up to 100,000 skilled trades workers
  • by 2030–2031

The government says this is necessary to support:

  • housing construction
  • infrastructure expansion
  • industrial growth
  • defence-related projects

The initiative also includes:

  • paid pathways into trades
  • hands-on work experience
  • hiring support programs

Young Canadians Could Benefit From New Entry-Level Opportunities

To address rising youth unemployment, the government also plans to expand access to:

  • paid entry-level trades jobs
  • apprenticeship pathways
  • work experience opportunities

The programs are expected to target Canadians aged:

  • 15 to 30 years old

These opportunities could help younger workers gain:

  • real job experience
  • trade skills
  • apprenticeship eligibility
  • long-term career opportunities

before entering full apprenticeship programs.

Which Trades Are Most Popular in Canada?

According to Statistics Canada, nearly 500,000 people were registered in apprenticeship programs for Red Seal trades in 2024.

Some of the most common trades included:

  • construction electricians
  • carpenters
  • automotive service technicians
  • plumbers

Many of these occupations continue to experience strong labour demand nationwide.

Why Skilled Trades Are Becoming More Important

Skilled trades jobs are becoming increasingly valuable in Canada because:

  • many industries face worker shortages
  • experienced tradespeople are retiring
  • housing demand remains high
  • infrastructure projects continue expanding

Trades careers can also offer:

  • strong salaries
  • job security
  • opportunities for self-employment
  • lower education debt compared to some university paths

As a result, governments and employers are investing heavily in attracting new workers to the sector.

What This Means for Workers

If implemented, the new support measures could significantly reduce financial barriers for apprentices.

Potential benefits include:

  • extra income during training
  • financial rewards for certification completion
  • improved access to apprenticeships
  • more job opportunities nationwide

For workers considering careers in the skilled trades, the new incentives could make apprenticeships more financially manageable.

Final Thoughts

Canada’s proposed $5,000 bonus for workers completing Red Seal certification reflects the growing importance of skilled trades in the country’s economy.

With billions of dollars being invested into training and workforce development, the government is signaling that trades workers will play a critical role in Canada’s future.

From electricians and plumbers to carpenters and automotive technicians, skilled trades careers are becoming some of the most in-demand pathways in the country — and workers entering these professions could soon receive substantial financial support along the way.
